20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Screen Used Props

This first prop is a sofa which was located at the forward entrance/exit to the salon (depending on which way you were headed) on the starboard side of the ship.  It was opposite the desk on the port side which was famous for being the evil Mr. Gower's desk in It's a Wonderful Life which starred Jimmy Stewart.

As you can see, it has suffered some use over the years starring perhaps in countless other films after 1966 when it was removed from the Disneyland Walkthrough.  Cracks in the woodwork, the apparent reupholstering, a lighter finish, and a couple of broken springs suggest this.

This sofa was recently up for auction on eBay for a starting bid of twelve thousand dollars on.  If you were the winning bidder and would like to contribute more to this sight, please contact me.

This is a painting that was hung in the salon set.  I'm not sure where at the moment.  Given it's versatility, this painting must have been used in numerious films which would explain rather poor condition.

A close-up of one of the corners of the painting.  Notice the wood underneath.  All the ornate carvings appear to be foam or something other than wood.

The Salon Viewport Aquarium.  An interesting thing to note about this prop is that it is far more red than the movie led one to believe.  The glass had been cracked but other than that, the piece is in fine condition considering that it has sat for the past thirty six years in a prop house owned by Disney somewhere.

An arial shot of the aquarium.  Given it's rather special use, it is doubtful that this piece ever showed up in any movies after 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.  While this is probably wishful thinking, there appears to be some debris in the tank.  Fish food perhaps?  Yeah right...it's probably chipped paint.  Another interesting thing to note about the aquarium is that it is made of metal, not wood or fiberglass.

This is an actual diver's helmet used in the film.  Whether it is one of the functional modified Japanese pearl divers' helmets or one of the fiberglass mockups used when filming on the sets back in Burbank is unknown.  However, the inclusion of the air hose visible behind the helmet's "porthole" suggests that it is the fully functional version.

This is the original pipe organ played by James Mason in the Salon set of the Nautilus.  The organ can currently be seen in the Haunted Mansion ride in Disneyland here in Anaheim.

The forever famous and ORIGINAL eleven foot miniature of the Nautilus used in filming the underwater sequences for the film.
